Lithophane

A Lithophane is a thin layer of a translucent material that is sculpted in a fashion that varies in thickness which lets in different amounts of light thus forming an image. Although they have been traditionally made out of porcelain, they can be made using a 3D printer.

Any picture you desire can be made into one, we have partnered with our friends over at ExplodingGophersPhotography@gmail.com to bring you high-quality photos and lithophanes. They can be purchased as just the lithophane or as a set with a light, some assembly will be required.

Lithophanes can be made in a variety of shapes, including curved, flat, and spherical. They can also be mounted in a variety of ways for example, a flat one can be mounted to a window using some string and a suction cup. Please note that PLA is heat sensitive and can deform if left exposed to large amounts of heat over a long period of time. Several flat lithophanes can be mounted inside a frame to create a box.
